How do you choose your charities every year?

At the start of each year, our leadership team will shortlist four charities for our members to decide on when Orientation Week (O-Week) registration occurs (end of February).  This does not mean we will only support these two, the leadership team will deem whether other causes, such as natural disasters, should be supported throughout the year.

According to our Constitution, we predominantly support Australian and Sri Lankan charities.  If a need for emergency support arises elsewhere, our leadership team will consider whether it should be supported or not.

I’m an International Student, is there any chance you can help me?
We sure can! Our International Representative will reach out to our international members at the start of each semester to help you with your questions on an individual case basis.

For 2019, this will be:

Contact Name: Visith Daluwatta
Contact Email: visith@slaya.org.au

Please bear in mind he is still a student with various responsibilities to manage outside SLAYA, so it may take a couple of days to get a reply.

Where are you located?

We are a West Australian club currently affiliated with four universities: Curtin University, Edith Cowan University (ECU), Murdoch University and the University of Western Australia (UWA).  This does not mean that membership is limited to these universities – it is open to everyone.

1) A link on your site is broken.

Please report any page issues to hello@slaya.org.au.

2) The form asks for my mobile number – why do you need this?

It is necessary for us to collect certain types of information in order to meet Guild Governance requirements and/or Third-Party Apps our members use (i.e. QPay).  For more information please refer to our privacy policy.

1) I’m not in University.  Am I still allowed to purchase a membership?

Yes!  Our association is not limited to university students only, therefore studying is not a membership requirement.

2) I’m not Sri Lankan.  Can I still join your association?

YES.  Our target audience is primarily youth with a passion for Sri Lankan culture and/or supporting charitable work.  Moreover, SLAYA values inclusivity and diversity, we strongly encourage those of other backgrounds to join us.

3) What are the benefits of becoming a SLAYA member? Membership is so expensive!

Not to worry – you’ll get it back instantly! The annual $5 gives you access to exclusive partner discounts (student savings yaas!), discounted SLAYA event tickets, international student support, monthly newsletters with early event releases, bonus competition entries, the ability to expand your network… all while assisting worthwhile charities!

4) How long is my membership valid for?

Memberships are only valid for a year – therefore it is necessary to renew them on an annual basis.  All 2019 memberships will expire on the 16/02/2020 (night before O-Week begins!).

5) I bought my membership. What now?

If you purchase a membership at the start of the year you’ll receive a welcome email in the first week of university (end of February/early March) which will tell you how to start making the most of your membership.  If not, follow the instructions here.  Upcoming events can be found on our Facebook page.

6) How can I access the special discounts I was promised?

You’ll need to download the QPay application via Google Play or the Apple store.  Instructions can be found here.

7) What are the discounts on offer for 2019?

View the full list of partner discounts here.

1) I’m not Sri Lankan.  Can I still apply for the leadership team?

YES.  Our target audience is primarily youth with a passion for Sri Lankan culture and/or supporting charitable work.  Moreover, SLAYA values inclusivity and diversity, we strongly encourage those of other backgrounds to join us.

2) I’m not in University.  Am I still allowed to apply for the leadership team?

Yes!  As we are a West Australian club, we welcome everyone to apply and strengthen their leadership potential.

3) What are the benefits of joining the leadership team?

In order to be successful when you graduate, it is important to have a combination of hard and soft skills.  Hard skills refers to an individual’s technical abilities, whereas soft skills are the people skills that aren’t as easy to teach.  Being part of an association like SLAYA can be extremely beneficial to your own professional development as it strengthens the soft skills that employers look for, which graduates tend to struggle with as they haven’t had the chance to develop them.

Here’s an overview of what we can help you develop:

  • Invaluable Leadership Skills
  • Event Management Skills
  • Strengthened Interpersonal Skills (such as Communication, Time Management & more)
  • Increased Networking Opportunities
  • Professional Development Opportunities
  • Recognition at your University (such as Curtin’s Extra Certificate)
  • Making New Friends from a Similar Background

If you would like to discuss this further, please send us an email.

4) How can I join the leadership team?

We open applications for our leadership team early February each year and close a week into the first week of university (early March).  Information regarding this can be found on our TEAM page.

1) Where can I buy tickets for [Event Name]?

Our Facebook events always have a direct link to our tickets, email newsletters are generally released around the time of events and our Instagram Bio will have either a link to the event page or tickets.  In the future we hope to be able to sell event tickets directly through our own website.

2) I didn’t sign up as a member earlier in the year, can I sign up now?

Membership can be purchased all throughout the year unless it’s just before our annual ball (as it’s unfair to those who signed up earlier if you’re just after the substantial event discount) or the last event of the year (as you won’t be getting value for your money).

Still Need Help?

A member of our diligent team will reply as soon as possible.
